Help a baby breathe Still got change? Your change can help a baby breathe. The harsh reality is that between 5% and 15% of pregnancies result in maternal illness, preterm labour, or difficulties with labour and delivery. In these trying circumstances, medical experts have to jump in to ensure that both the baby and its mother survive. But keeping a premature baby alive involves expensive medical equipment in the form of breathing pumps known as CPAP. These machines gently inflate the lungs and help keep them open – a process that can help save a critically ill baby with under-developed lungs. In South Africa, thousands of babies can be saved if more of these machines are available, especially in rural areas where health-care services are often inadequate. In some of our regional and district hospitals, the infant death rates are as high as 45%. Make a difference this February. Drop your donation into the money box at a Pick n Pay till and we’ll ensure that it goes towards this worthy cause.
